• What is a pangram?

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog is an English-language pangram, that is, a phrase that contains all of the letters of the english alphabet. It has been used to test typewriters and computer keyboards, and in other applications involving all of the letters in the English alphabet. Owing to its shortness and coherence, it has become widely known.

  • If things aren’t breaking, then you’re not moving fast enough. People learn by making mistakes.
    —  Mark Zuckerberg
  • Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
    —  Steve Jobs

  • A picture of a lush green hill, called Bliss, is one of the most recognizable images in the world thanks to its place as the Windows XP default wallpaper — but where did it come from? Turns out it’s a real scene, not a CG image. It was taken in Sonoma County, CA, circa 1996 by photographer Charles O’Rear. O’Rear is not allowed to disclose how much Microsoft paid him for Bliss, but he says the payday was the second highest for a living photographer, behind a guy who sold a photo of Bill Clinton hugging Monica Lewinsky. As for the location, it’s now a vineyard, which you can see in an updated photo after the jump. Google Maps also provides a 360-degree view of the area.

  • CMU develops self-driving cars that are impossible to crash

At long last, and many decades after the quasiprophetic words of our sci-fi forefathers, we seem to be gravitating towards a world full of autonomous, crash-proof vehicles. Some element of self-driving vehicles was always to be expected, of course. With ubiquitous, cheap computers and high-quality digital cameras and sensors, it was inevitable — but crash-proof cars? Cars that can drive themselves and prove, with 100% certainty, that they will avoid other vehicles? Believe it or not, that’s what a team at Carnegie Mellon University is developing.

  • Nowadays, we have so many electronic devices and each comes with at least one cable either for charging or hooking up to your computer. This is one clever way to use your office supplies and get your cables organized on your desk.

  • Satellite searches could spot Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster

Adventurer Steve Fossett went missing Sept. 3 about 70 miles southeast of Reno, Nevada, in a small plane. He left no flight plan, and searchers have combed tens of thousands of square miles of Nevada and California. After weeks of fruitless searches, and with the survival window closing, Web users were enlisted to help in Fossett’s rescue, from the comfort of their own homes. Using a program called Mechanical Turk, high-resolution satellite imagery of the search area was collected and analyzed. Participants were shown a single satellite image and asked to note any objects or wreckage that could be a plane or its debris.

There’s built-in Wi-Fi and 3G, so you can stay connected everywhere, and a webcam for video chat. The vibrant 12-inch LCD display, full-size keyboard and oversized touchpad let you enjoy the web comfortably. And at just 3.8 pounds with over eight hours of active usage and a week of standby time, it’s easy to take along for the ride. What did we leave out? Spinning disks, caps-lock key, function keys, and lap burns.
