  • Zebra Puzzle

The zebra puzzle is a well-known logic puzzle. It is often called Einstein’s Puzzle or Einstein’s Riddle because it is said to have been invented by Albert Einstein as a boy, with the claim that Einstein said “only 2 percent of the world’s population can solve it.” The puzzle is also sometimes attributed to Lewis Carroll. However, there is no known evidence for Einstein’s or Carroll’s authorship; and the original puzzle cited below mentions brands of cigarette, such as Kools, that did not exist during Carroll’s lifetime or Einstein’s boyhood.

  • 400 people volunteer for one-way mission to Mars

An interplanetary trip to Mars could take as little as 10 months, but returning would be virtually impossible. As many as 400 people volunteered for a one-way mission to Mars, organized by the Journal of Cosmology published in the United States, according to foxnews.com, Monday.  A special edition of the journal details exactly how a privately-funded, one-way mission to Mars could depart as soon as 20 years from now. Volunteers include Peter Greaves, the father of three and a jack-of-all-trades who started his own motorcycle dispatch company; a 69-year-old computer programmer, a college student at Texas A&M, a 45-year-old nurse and a pastor, the report said. Greaves was quoted as saying, “I envision life on Mars to be stunning, frightening, lonely, quite cramped and busy. Unlike Earth, I wouldn’t be able to sit by a stream or take in the view of nature’s wonder, or hug a friend, or breath deeply the sweet smell of fresh air ― but my experience would be so different from all 6 to 7 billion human beings … that in itself would make up for the things I left behind.” Given the difficulties of the mission, Lana Tao, the editor of the journal, said she was surprised by the response, according to foxnews.com. “The e-mails volunteering were a complete surprise. At first we thought the e-mails were a joke, that volunteers were not serious. Then we received more and more with men giving their reasons and qualifications, and we realized they were completely serious.”
